How do I know if I'm addicted to pornography? Evaluate yourself

Self Therapy requires working on your frame of mind. This means discovering what states of mind brings you to fall, and training your mind how to think when you are feeling vulnerable. As a first step to self-therapy, we suggest that you read carefully the Mind-Tips that we have posted on this site.


Besides learning to think a certain way, meditation can often be used to break free of addictive and destructive behaviors. This is one of the techniques used by the professionals in this field (and you may indeed need a competent therapist to help you do this properly). However, if you feel you want to try it on your own, here are some useful tips.

Here's an example of one meditation technique that you may be able to do on your own.

Try it three times a week, for a few weeks. (It should take about 25 minutes each time).

Sit in a comfortable chair. Close your eyes. Completely relax. To help you relax and enter a meditative state, breath in slowly, hold for a few seconds, and then breath out. Repeat this 10 times. Afterwards, imagine you are diving into a deep pond. See yourself swimming down, deeper and deeper. (This will help you access your subconscious mind). Then, picture yourself in a field, holding a balloon. The balloon contains all of your sexual tension and pain inside it. Picture this well. Then, release the balloon in your mind, with all the tension and pain inside it. Watch the balloon slowly climb away, higher and higher, count the feet it rises in your mind, until the balloon is finally out of site. When you are done with the balloon, imagine again that you are at the bottom of the deep pond. Start swimming back up, slowly coming closer and closer to the surface. Then, break out of the water. Open your eyes, get up from your chair and walk away feeling free.



Sometimes even a quick meditation technique may help you overcome a sudden, powerful urge.

Stop what you are doing and take four deep, slow breaths. Breath in slowly, hold for a few seconds, and then breath out. With each breath in, see yourself breathing in tranquility, and with each breath out, see yourself letting go of sexual tension. Picture in your mind that the "breathing out" is actually the release that you crave so much, and that you need nothing more. Then walk away feeling free.

Pornography addiction can make you feel bad about yourself, unbalance your attitude to sex, damage relationships and waste your time and money. Like many compulsive behaviors, porn addiction is usually a secret addiction.

It is not uncommon for a respectable member of the community to have time, self esteem and potential sapped by hours viewing porn. Friends, family and colleagues may be very disappointed if they knew, but you know and afterwards you can feel empty and worthless.

The nature of porn addiction

Porn addiction is a dim reflection real passion and intimacy, and while it sometimes replaces these needs it does not fulfil them. Pornography addiction isn't always primarily to do with sex! Feelings of loneliness, boredom, insecurity or just having the opportunity can all result in porn addiction.

Porn is a fraud because it promises something it doesn't deliver. People use it to escape reality but it actually worsens the very reality you are trying to escape from. Pornography addiction blunts the senses and stops you appreciating the subtitles of life.

However like any addiction it never ultimately delivers what it seems to promise because the more you view the more you want to view, and the more extreme the pornography that you seek out.

Porn addiction locks your attention

Pornography addiction has a kind of negative hypnotic effect, grabbing then locking your attention until you 'wake up' from the porn trance feeling exhausted and miserable. The fact is you may go for days, weeks or months without using porn and then almost without you knowing it you're back into it again.

Maybe you'd kidded yourself that you're not really hooked or you'd just view porn for a few minutes but then you become entranced again and find yourself back in the life-destroying cycle.
